Has anyone ever put duckweed into their indoor vivarium/paludarium/aquarium? I got some today but it stinks BADDD, sooo bad that unless someone can assure me that the smell will go away over time then I don't think I can put it into the aquarium. The guy I got it from says he triple washes it...I think it needs 10+ more washes haha.

I have duckweed in my tank, and I never remember it smelling bad.

Hmm thats what I'm hearing from alot of people but seriously mine is smelling like the sewer or something, nothing nice smelling thats for sure. My last batch smelled the same way so maybe I just dont like duckweed smell haha.

Or maybe your supplier is going and fishing the stuff out of the sewer because seriously, duckweed doesn't smell any different than other aquatic plants.

I'm sure gonna ask the guy where he gets it from cuz it does smell like it was fished out of the sewer, but so did my last batch and I don't think I got it from the same place. I did notice some die-off today, not much but some so maybe thats where the smell is coming from but gosh if it smells that bad when it dies then I don't want to take a chance at keeping it alive cause usually I fail at keeping plants alive very long.

Rethink starting with the stuff. Duckweed drives me nuts on a daily basis now. I got some out of a pond on our property, set in in a bucket with clean water, and changed the water every day for a week. Now a year later, I sit and clean duckweed out of all my tanks for hours. It blocks the light to all the other plants, clogs up the intakes on the filters. Its a royal pain in the butt!!! That one handfull of duckweed has probably made a football field of duckweed in the past yr. :( I HATE DUCKWEED!

duckweed is used in many sewer systems because it is so effective at removing nitrogen and phosphorous (however it cannot move heavy metals)

it is likely that it may have came from a sewer system

rinse it through plenty and it should be ok

Great, so I paid money for something that lives in the sewer haha.:wall:
