What's everyone's take on duckweed? I bought some plants and fish at a new place and all their tanks were "infested" with it. I thought I had sucessfully removed it all but I found some in my tank. I promptly removed it because I really don't want it in my tank. Hopefully I got it all. That got me thinking--how many people have it in their tanks? Do you like it? Or are you fighting a constant battle to remove it?

I absolutely HATE duckweed!
I had to dry out my tank just to get rid of it, because even if one piece was left, i would be overwhelmed in a couple days.

I really don't mind duckweed. I put it in my mature tanks to cut some of the light so I don't have to trim as much. When I want to get rid of it I scoop out as much as I can with a net, trim down any plants that reach the surface so it cant hide anywhere, and add some congo tetras. The congos love the stuff.

I liek it in my smaller tanks and usually just scoop some out each week to leave the top not completely covered. But in my bigger tank where I add ferts and such it does tend to grow too fast for me.

As for it comming back after you removed it all, well check your filter, there is bound to be some in there, even stuck in the media. Quite the survivor and an excellent nitrate sponge.

I was just going to ask if it would be good at reducing nitrates. I was looking for an easy plant to put in a FO tank to bring down nitrate levels, and I saw this thread and thought duckweed might be it.

I can't say that I really like the stuff, but haven't started hating it yet either. I throw away about 1/2 pound (dry weight) a week, and have it in all of my tanks. It does do wonders for nitrates from what I can see, but since I'm buying nitrates and adding them this is not a plus for me. If I ever get a tank of Herbivores set up, I'm sure I'll find a new appreciation for it. I only have one tank that it will cover in a week, the others will be about half covered each week, and I scoop all I can out with a net when I do my partials. For now I consider it far less of a problem than my Java moss which I would dearly love to erradicate from my tanks.

You know, everywhere I look people are trying to get rid of duckweed, but it was just about the only plant I have had trouble growing! I can't manage to keep it in my tank whenever some hitch hikes in with new plants! But then again my gourami's might have had something to do with that. Mmmm, snack time!

i TRYED to grow duckweed, but the current from my filters would force it down into the water and it would get sucked into the filter inlet...so i was never sucessful.
