I was just given a 5 gallon tank. I was wondering if I could keep dwarf cories in it, and if so, how many would be okay for a tank that size?

Also, what type of cories are considered dwarf?

Although not ideal, a 5 gallon tank would be fine for a small group of dwarf cory's (probably no more than 5). Dwarf cory's are a specific genus that reach about 1" in maturity and you should be able to find them at a good LFS.

Thanks for the reply :)

While I haven't been able to find any info on dwarf cories, I have been able to find info on pygmy cories. Are these the same fish?

No they are not the same fish. Pygmy's grow to 1.5 inches. BUT you can find info on a dwarf cory in the species profiles on this site.

AFAIK, Pygmy Cories will only get to about an inch. I have several and they've never grown bigger than that. I believe there are a few cories that catch the name dwarf though.

Yah, most of my pygmies have never gotten more than an inch long. And thats a nose to tip of tail measurement. Dwarf cories are larger.

Pygmy cories are corydoras pygmaeus. There are two other kinds, but you are less likely to find the one of them, and probably won't ever find the other species.

So maybe I should look into the pygmy cories, if they are smaller of the two.

Also, I was wondering about a small group of the smallest sort of shell dweller for this tank (multis?). Would that work, or do I need a larger tank for those guys?

I saw the busy little cories at the store and just loved them. I want fish that are moving around and doing things. :)
