I am considering getting a few dwarf crayfish for my 16 gallon tank, which now is occupied only by red ramshorn snails. I have heard conflicting information as to whether the dwarf crays will harm the snails or not. Any thoughts or experiences are greatly appreciated.

I've watched at least one of my adult dwarf cajuns trying to pick smaller red rams out of their shells. I don't think I ever actually saw it grab one out, but I did find a number of empty shells lying about from time to time. The only critters in the tank were red rams, long nose snails, dwarf cajuns, and shrimp. There wasn't ever any real threat to the population, but some did get eaten.

Now I harvest red rams from that tank to feed to my assassins. :naughty:

I use to have a P Alleni (blue dwarf cray) and he would pluck the rams horns out of their shells and eat them.

Alleni aren't dwarfs though... ?

Some of my dwarf species are able to eat the ramshorn snails when they are still on the small side but they don't seem to be able to eat the larger ones.

They aren't the tiny crays. Because they only grow to 3-4", they are still considered "dwarf".

Are you sure about that? Everything I've found via google says they can get up to 7" in length. I've never heard anyone refer to a cray over 3" in size as a dwarf.

I am by no means an expert, but the P Alleni I had was an adult male when I got rid of him. He was 3 1/2" not including his pincers. When I bought him, through a breeder, they referred to the P Alleni as a dwarf cray.
