I recently purchased a Dwarf African Frog from the LFS. I have read that worms, namely black worms, are essential to their diet, is this true? Also, I suspect these guys could be prone to 'hopping' out of the tank, is this correct? Finally, do you guys have any tips about caring for them?

Ok as long as you have a hood you should be ok. I never had a problem with them jumping out. Also I just fed mine sinking pellets and they ate it. THey are not had to take care of. THey spend most of their time sitting at the bottom doing nothing. They shoot up to the surface every now and then for air but that's about it. They are actually pretty boring. LOL!! Good luck with him.

I too only feed mine sinking pellets... I would not keep the tank filled to the brim as if there is an opening in the top your frog might try to escape. One day I noticed my cat looking at something - which turned out to be my frog hoping around on the carpet. I have no idea how long he was out but he has been in good health ever since I put him back. He still spends all night swiming at the top of the tank so I leave the water a couple of inches lower on this tank than most of my others.

i use bloodworms on purpose, mostly freeze dried but some frozen. i also think they might get into the shrimp pellets and possibly even the ghost shrimp that keep disappearing from the tank.

they seemed like likely culprits. ;)

they really don't "do" alot, not that i watch them constantly. i do see them floating near the top of the tank occasionally to get air and sometimes just moving around doing whatever. i also rarely light that tank so they have been known to scurry around like mad when i flip the lights on.

they are really sort of boring in a way, but probably because i don't watch them enough. my friend had a couple of albino clawed frogs and it was pretty neat to watch them eating pellets with their hands.

They will eat anything. To keep other fish from eating the food before your frog gets it, I use a straw to deliver the food in front of their face. They know when feeding time is and they certainly know what the straw is. As for food, I have been feeding mine flakes, shrimp, or any protein from the table scraps. Yes they eat chicken, egg, beef, its a little tedious to feed them, but watching their reactions is worth it. Some might not agree with my feeding habits, but my three frogs in a 55 gal tank with other fish are healthy and active. Hope this helps, D
