Hey all,

I was wondering;I read that dwarf gouramis like to be kept in 2s or 3s, but the only gouramis available at LFS's are usually all males, correct? So, would 3 male dwarf gouramis fight? Are they as aggresive towards other "Anabantids" as bettas?

Thanks

I don't know how they get along with each other (all being males), but I think the betta may chase them. At least mine used to. :(

For Starters

Dwarf's are teritoral and will fight there are a few ways of dealing with this

REARANGE your WHOLE tank prior to them being introduced and each one will setup its territory ........

THEY WILL FIGHT but not to death if one Dwarf crosses into the others territory

i would Post your tank size and aspects of your tank here then i will post again

IMO

Buy all 3 ...... only if there the same size
see what happends........ take one of even 2 back if they start being two aggressave..

i got 2 then nother 1 and the first 2 started fighting once the 3 was there??? its wiered but happends

when i got rid of the 3rd the fighting was back to normal...

Well I am no pro when it comes to dwarf gouramis. But I did have two male Blue gouramis, I dont know if they are really that similar in behaviour or not but anywho my blues got along with eachother fine, but they tag teamed and killed every other fish in my tank except for two clown loaches.
They were like a little group of thugs every time another fish passed by both of them would nip at it and hassle it until it hid in a cave or in the leaves of my plants. eventually after about 2 months all my fish died probably more of the stress of constantly being attacked than actually being damaged but they did die.
They managed to kill of a red tailed red eyed puffer(?), two blueRams, Two flame gouramies and a few otos.
But they got along with eachother just fine.

It depends almost entirely on the personality of the individual fish you get. Anabantoids have some of the most unique personalities among fish. Some bettas are nice, some are terrors. Some paradise fish are good in communities, some kill everything.

Dwarf gouramis are not aggressive by any means, but they are territorial.

If you would like to err on the side of caution, just get one. He will be completely happy alone. If you'd like to try more, get 3, NOT 2. 2 will result in one dominant, and one submissive and would create a bad situation. Add the three on a day when you will be home all day to supervise. If things get out of hand, take two back to the store (make sure ahead of time that the store will allow this).

I had three dwarves in a 10g. They were fine together. I have had 3 that did not get along together whatsoever. I had two that would fight in a 55g. It is really dependant on the fish, like I said.

If you do get more than one, make certain that there are many, many hiding places in the tank. They will each stake out a territory and out of sight is out of mind:)

IME - dwarf gouramis really aren't much like full size gouramis, especially the male blues.
