i have changed my lighting to 2 15 watt CFL spiral bulbs and they should be adequate for my 10 gallon tank. I started dosing with excel, flourish and will start to dose with iron from seachem. I have also placed root tabs for the hair grass, but it still seems to "yellow" and deteriorate. Sigh!:nilly::nilly: Anyone have any suggestions? My substrate is just pool filter sand because i did not put aquarium soil in at the beginning. Now that i have a shrimp colony in it, i would hate to have to take them out and take the chance of killing them all. Please help or leave me suggestions on what i should do.

Some members on this forum have said that their hairgrass was able to grow with just root tabs and sand as a substrate. I dont know what is going on with mine.

Here is a picture.

Is the DHG new? If so it will probably take some time to settle to your conditions. Unless you purchased it from another hobbyist it may have also been grown emersed to which it's attempting to adapt to submersed growth as well.

If this is occurring to a plant that has been in you tank forever I have no clue...sorry

How was it when you got it? If it was grown in the plastic pots, were you able to remove all of the rockwool from the roots?

I'm growing it in pool sand under high lights too. I'm not using root tabs but instead using EI dosing. It was slow going at first but has really picked up of late.

One thing you can do is to cut it to about 1.5 - 2 inches.

i would also suggest cutting it down, and removing any grass blades that are brown all the way through. my theory is that the plant doesn't have to work so hard to bring nutrients to the ends of the plant when it's shorter, giving it a better opportunity to grow. at least my theory works with vals all the time, lol.

I planted it 2 weeks ago, but i have just started to add flourish today. (excel for 2 weeks). Just added root tabs 3 days ago.

The roots were no in a pot or anything, but had rock wool on it. I tried to remove almost all of it. Also, since the clump was kind of large, i split it up into about 4 potions which you can see in the picture. I will certainly try to cut it and see how it goes.

WOW :omg: that was extremely helpful. I didn't do any of that (except split them up and take out the wool :shakehead:. Thank you very much. I will cut the grass down a bit and see how it goes.

I have seen that usually takes about a month for the plants to adapt in a new tank, after that time is when you will start to see new growth.

:iagree: I rushed my DHG planting (black sand + flourish root tab), and while I have offshoots and growth, I have a lot of brown blech. I may uproot everything, trim & replant. Or I'll just let it go and hope the snails clean up the blechy stuff.
