Today I decided to finally go out and get my dwarf puffer fish. . . I went to Petco to see if they had any and the girl there said that she thought they had made them illegal in Maine. She is one of Petcos more knowledgeable staff. I was surprised to hear that since I remembered seeing them at another petstore. I went to the other petstore to ask if they had any in and she said that they hadn't had any in in a coupe of weeks but she hadn't heard of them being illegal. So now my question is where would you find out what is illegal in Maine? Is there a data base you can search in somewhere on a website? I just recently found out that snails were illegal in Maine aswell.

According to one site I found, it says that the figure 8 and striped puffer are still unrestricted but it also says just puffer fish, so I don't think they are illegal. I live in WV and both of the stores that I regular including the one I sell to has been unable to get and dwarf puffers in lately for some reason, but it isn't because they are illegal. What type of snails are you referring to? Certain species of apple snails have been restricted due to people letting them go outside. If all snails are prohibited in Maine then you wouldn't really be able to care for a puffer fish since snails are a must in their diet. I hope this helped!

The scientific name listed as "unrestricted" on their site is Tetraodon palembangensis which isn't even the figure 8 puffer (Tetraodon biocellatus) so technically they aren't even correct in saying that figure 8's are unrestricted. T. palembangensis is a completely different species. Dwarf puffers are C. travancoricus.

I found this interesting.

All requests must include a review and processing fee of $50.00 for each species to be considered.

Nice way to put some cash in the pocket.

Hmmm thanks guys! Maybe this is something rather new they are putting a ban on or something. They definitely had puffers in one of those petshops a couple weeks ago.

brittanyd I thought I was reading somewhere that they were one of the puffers that didn't absolutely need snails in their diet. Hmmm. But that would make sense since their beaks grow and need some sort of hard thing to keep the down right?

Is it possible to order somewhere else and have snails, or a puffer for that matter, mailed to me? Just curious if it would get stopped by the mail people or not when it came into Maine . . .

I really really really want one! If not then perhaps I can try and smuggle them in when I visit the boyfriend in New Hampshire . . but that's an aweful long way for them to survive in a bag don't ya think? It's like 3.5 hours to get back home.

Hahaha hey I already got a record goin for myself why not add some more on! Atleast this time it will be for something that I love!

If anyone from the government is watching this conversation...I had absolutely NOTHING to do with ANY illegal actions that may happen or have previously occured regarding the original poster of this thread :lipssealedsmilie:

LOL

What's the worst they gunna do to me? Give me another fine if they find out I'm keeping illegal fish and snails .
