I'm planning on putting two dwarf puffers in my ten gallon tank.

I'm just asking what your opinions are on this fish. Are they active fish that will make my tank more lively, or will they just do nothing and hide in the plants all day? Last time, I put some cardinals in my ten gallon, and they were quite boring, and I don't want that to happen again with dwarf puffers. Are dwarf puffers shy or do they swim around in the front and a lot and are active?

Good choice for a 10g! :D Dwarf puffers will hide for a couple of days when you first get them, but eventually they'll get used to you feeding them, and they will be all over the tank.

I would suggest you get 3, 1 male and two females. They are notorious fin nippers, and will even go after fish much larger than they are. So keep that in mind if you plan on keeping tankmates with them.

I love my trio, and my only gripe is that it's difficult to provide them snails if you don't have a place to cultivate them, but DP's don't require snail shells to wear down their teeth like other puffers. So live worms, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp seems to be all mine will eat.

You can have up to 4 DPs in a 10 gallon, but I would suggest 3 DPs and 2 otos as a cleanup crew. But, dwarfpuffers.com is the best site for this information.
 
go w/ 3 females and forget the male. Males are too aggressive for my taste. and as far as being interesting, they seem to be very smart fish. Once they get used to the new tank they will be out exploring everything.

Males are more agressive than females?

Would 1 male and 1 female work? I'm only going to get 2 puffers, since I plan on other fishes also. What sex combination would be best for two puffers? How would I tell them apart?
 
You could get 1 male and 3 females, and you should be fine. There are no other fishes really compatible with these guys due to there nippy and aggressive nature.

dwarfpuffers.com <-- That site will give you everything you need to know. In case you're too lazy, males have a dark line down the middle and have wrinkles behind their eyes.

Only otocinculus catfish would really be compatible with these guys, if you want otos, get 1 male DP, 2 female DPs, & 2 otocinculus.

I'm sure it's just an oversight, but I haven't read anyone that suggested 4 of them. Just 3- one male and 2 females (or all females). Was it a typo and you meant that 3 is too much? or just misread the thread?
