Do you know that a bottom can crack if there is just 1 grain of sand underneath the tank? If you put a tank somewhere even for a moment, always put it on a towel or piece of cardboard or styrofoam whatever.

You could get tubs (clear rubbermaid) to grow small fish or aquatic critters in if it's less expense then tanks.
