eel opinions please

acctually im considering 2 male convicts i dont want any breeding going on in that tank. at first i thought it would be a neat perpetual source of food till i read about their spawing habits. and having had a JD before id probably say that the convicts would end up dead. a grown JD is not to be messed with.

but since the jd eating the eel is just theory and speculation im going to try it. im confident that if an oscar and a JD kept together from infancy can get along just fine im sure it will cross apply to the eel. if not then i just spent 10 bucks on a pretty feeder fish. either way ill be sure to document what happens since introduction since it seems to be a source of debate. might end up as some good research.


yeah ice i dont know if the zig zag and the peacock are the same thing cause they dont seem to llook the same on google.

i also think the burrowing will help it avoid the JDs angery wraith although im more worried about the convicts becomeing lunch than i am them attacking the eel.
 
Cons are scrappy and much faster than a JD most will agree your JD would be left w/ no fins if you had a pair. I would suggest you look into a tiger botia insted of the eel they are pretty scrappy although there mouth is small I think they grow around 8-10" but probably 2" high and they can also burrow under the sand and do a exellent job of cleaning up. IMO a better choice
 
possibly the 55g is toto small for both the jd and the eel

although this leads me to my next post

although when i build my 8 foot tank ill be getting a eel acctually probaby 3 tire tracks for the 8 foot tank.
 
uhhh wth are you talking about.

first nobody even commented on what i acctually asked to this post still nobody has. and it wasent advise i was asking for but a description of behavior comming from first hand exsperience.

secondly your EVERYONE is acctually one person. and as for ignore i belive we had a rather long conversation of the subject. but yes for your satisfaction i did come to my decision based of completly diffrent criteria than what he was providing. as for not following his advise. it was not first hand exsperince in that exact situation. it was speculation, and theory.

and finnally we acctually came to a consensus deciding to get eels when i have a bigger tank.

this may seem rude but i hope it makes you acctually read the whole thread before you JUDGE somebody.

im not a noob and im not stupid and im certainly not going to sit through you badmouthing me completly ignorant of whats going on.

heres some advice, "next time read the thread before you make a post assaulting somebody"
 
Actually if you're only looking for something to stir up the sand because of gas pockets you should just buy some Malasyian Trumpet Snails.

They don't eat live plants, they're a good clean up crew and they burrow through the substrate during the day. Usually will only see them at night.
 
yeah i was thinkign about that . i dunno where we were talking about this but i was worried the JD would eat one whole and get impacted. maybe if i try while hes young and has not chance at eating them he will learn and when he gets older he wont bother. im getting som mts for my smaller tanks anyhow
 
Sorry if you did not like my replys but I had a 10" JD that a pair of cons almost killed him having worked at a LFS for a # of years I have heard several others w/ the same problem. Also I had my JD eat a peacock eel and 2 7"+ rope fish he grew up with so I know it is not a good idea. Anyhow I was just trying to steer you away from making a few bad descisons I have made myself.
