Eheim 2028 pro II vs Fluval 404..your thoughts?

After reading everything I can find on these two canister filters Im torn between them.

Im putting this on my 38 gal. to decide if I like it (semi-permanent MESSY oscars about to find a new home with a friend finally, about 5-6").

If I DO like it I plan on using the same filtration (doubled/tripled up) on my 125 (currently running 2 emperor 400s) and possibly as a backup "polisher" on the 180 (still shopping around for ~180 gallon tank..going for larger surface area and cant make my mind up).

Anyway I notice the fluval 404 runs a higher gph however its rated for a smaller aquarium and people say that even though it runs higher it has a tendancy to pass around the material instead of through. The eheim I like however it is more expensive just wondering how much people pay just in upkeep (filtering supplies). Also I saw that the Eheim (if I remember right) could also be hooked up to a bio-wheel unit? Has anyone run this setup at all?

Im just wondering what everyones likes/dislikes are on these 2 units and to find out which one people like more? Fluval IS cheaper and seems better but Ive been burned in the past before by too-good-to-be-true type products.

^What he said. Also, and not to start a Fluval flame war, if I were going for economy and features, I'd pick a Rena Filstar over the Fluval any day. But, if you have to money for the Eheim, go for it. They make a fine canister.

^What he said^ Fluvals suck (there I said it!). Rena's Filstars are much better, but still not as good as the Eheims. The Filstars are easy, cheep, and powerful.
 
Thank you for the responses....and judging by everyone here the winner seems to be clear.

Im not much worried about the money as long as it does the best job for my fish.

hmm now to go find a place I like to buy one from ;)
 
I have a fluval 204 that has been in constant use for a year and a half with no complaints.

I'm not saying it's better than an Eheim(cause it ain't) but it is a much cheaper filter.

Eheims are the king.

But Fluvals do not suck.
