This afternoon I added an Eheim 2213 to my 75g that already housed an xp3 filter. I just wanted to have protection if the xp3 ever failed for some reason plus I have always read that you can never have too much filtration. Now I am worried about the output of the Eheim. The xp3 output can be controlled with a valve on the spray bar but the 2213 does not have any way to slow down the output's force. The flow is pushing my plants around, especially the floating ones, which are being driven down farther into the tank. I'm not sure the fish like this flow either. I have the Eheim spray bar horizontally positioned at the top back of the tank. The bar is under water though because I did not want to agitate the surface. Would positioning the bar in another manner help control outflow? Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I will try the 45 degree angle. I am thinking of moving the space bar to sit across the side of the tank instead of the back too. I don't know if that would be any better but at least the force would be coming from a different angle. It's terrible watching those small neon tetras trying to push their way against the "tide"!

Thanks for the suggestion.

Curious as to why you'd go Eheim.

If you already had a Rena, a second Rena would have made more sense. Parts interchangability. Common replacement media, etc.

Why eheim?

Simple. The eheim has been sitting here for about a year. Had to do something with it! :)

IMHO, though, the rena is simpler to put together and use. I bought the eheim first because I fell for the line that eheim is the best. "The best" depends on what one values the most, I think. I value ease of directions, cleaning, and reassembling. I put together the Rena myself and had no problems. It took my engineer husband and me most of a day to figure out how to assemble the eheim and all its parts. The directions were almost useless.

There. I said it. Rena is better than eheim. Please, eheim lovers, do not flame me!

Sorry, you didn't get away with it:dance2:

What sort of an engineer is your Husband?

Hey, don't flame the hubby! Is that phrase supposed to be the equivalent of "And what medical school did you go to?" I'm not deterred by that one!

Hubby is an engineer who supervises other engineers who work with valves and pipes everyday. He was the one who quickly figured out where to put the double-taps and how long to cut the tubing. The directions were clueless on this part. To further support my case, last night I downloaded four pages of instructions on how to clean the eheim 2213 and replace the various media. This is going to take some serious study, I see. Having to calculate the percentage of this layer vs that layer is too much work IMHO (and those names! Come on people! EhfiSynth?, EhfiSubstrat? Who is this supposed to impress?).

Rena Lovers Unite!

I would say my XP3 was a lot easier to set up than my 2026. I've been an engineer (EE) as well, though my current job is not related, not that that matters much. If ease of setup figures heavily into you 'rating' is up to you. But for something that should perform well for years I dont mind too much if it causes a bit of frustration and takes a couple hours to put together. But I know what your talking about. The instructions that come in more languages than I knew existed dont help much, and some things arent translated all that clearly. I think were just a bit to spoiled to have easy to follow instructions for most things.

Probably make every bit of sense if you're German:)

You can love Rena if you want, but just see if your smiling in 20 years time:)

I'm a newbie on all this fish terminology. Two months ago I didn't know what a canister was. I bought a used eheim 2026 and put it together without even having a manual. I thought it was so simple. It is like a 5 piece puzzle that could only fit one way. I really don't see the difficulty in it. Maybe a 2213 is harder.
