Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a 60 gallon tank and I'm looking for some guidance. I have plenty of space below and price is not too much of a factor between the eheim and the wet/dry filter. But my main concern about the wet/dry filter is the noise. How loud is a wet/dry filter? Is having a wet/dry filter complete overkill for a 60 gallon tank? If I decide to go the canister route I am considering the Eheim 2215 which I hear is a pretty good one and also pretty quiet.

The wet/dry filter I am considering is the eshopps wd-100cs

Will a 300watt heater be sufficicient enough for a 60gallon tank?

Thanks in advance

How much noise a wet dry makes is dependent on several factors, including which return pump, flow rate, how the plumbing is laid out, how full the biotower is, etc. A well thought out and executed system can be just as quiet as a canister, but a canister is pretty much always quiet unless something's wrong with it. Carrying capacity is no contest, a wet dry will process a lot more ammonia in a given period of time/ The 300W heater will certainly be sufficient as long as you don't try to keep the tank more than 30 F over room temp. For most applications a 200W will handle a 60 gal.

I just purchased my first canister filter, after running mainly ACs for years. I bought the Eiheim 2217 (78.8 gal tank), and if it weren't for the spray bar, I would not know that it is running. Nearly silent. Directions for it stink, but after watching a coupla videos on the net, set up and priming were easy, even for someone as mechanically disadvantaged as I am. Good luck.

The only noise on my wet/dry is the sound of the pump. However, you need to keep your water levels high. Because I do not have glass covers on my tank yet I find that there is a fair amount of evaporation. Once the water level gets to a certain point air starts getting into the overflow which creates a lot of noise. You never have this issue with a canister. There are benefits to both. Canisters are super quiet (especially Ehiems). Sumps allow you to hide everything below your tank and give you added water volume to increase your fish load.

IMO if your tank is not drilled I would go with the canister because your are guaranteed a quiet aquarium and it is less work to set up.

As far as heaters it is always best to have 2 heaters for redundancy. I would think that 2, 150w heaters would be sufficient for a 60 Gallon. I run 2 300w on my 125 with a 45 gallon sump and have no issues.

Thanks all. I decided at this point in time it's not worth going the wet/dry filter setup even though I've always wanted to try it out. The tank I have is not predrilled and felt for the size of tank maybe it isn't worth the risk of noise, and needing additional space in back of tank. I also decided to up the canister to a 2217 giving me more GPH. By any chance is there a canister in the $150 price range that is superior to the Eheim 2217? Thank you

Try Ken's for the 2217. I found he had the best price. Good luck.
