I have a 55g Malawi cichlid tank w/ Marineland Emperor 400. Works well but little noisy and ugly for my taste. Thinking of changing to Eheim canister.

Please let me know your advice:

1. Are the Eheims truly silent?

2. Priming- I read many conflicting reports. Are they easy to prime, do you recommend using the Eheim 'Water Installation Kits'- do these make priming and maintenance easier? Should I buy the suction device they offer or is this unnecessary?

3. Taps- quick release– are these included or needed?

Thanks

1. To me, it's silent. My tank is in the living room so it doesn't really bother me.

2. Priming, uhm, I had to prime mine once only, that was during the initial setup.

3. Quick disconnects are included. During maintenance you shut of the valves on both sides and then disconnect the canister. After that connect, open valves and the canister will fill with water by itself.

1. I have two running in my bedroom and hear nothing. The fluorescent lights make more noise than these filters.

2. I primed only once when I first set the filter up...

3. ...quick disconnect valves are included and save you from having to prime again after maintenance.

yes, they are silent. (had one not 3 feet from my head for over a year in the bedroom)

priming is simple to begin with, and like said above, the valves prevent future priming troubles.

eheims are definitely the way to go, imo.

EDIT: forgot to mention the model i use is a 2028ProII.

I have a 2028 prof. II.

1. It is absolutely silent

2. I primed it once when I first set it up. Priming was actually a straightforward procedure.

3. Quick release taps are included in this model. I think that sometimes the 2213-15-17 series comes without quick releasing taps-valves. When selecting make sure to get a model that includes the quick disconnecting valves or else you will have to buy them separately.

Forgot to mention the model # on mine. It's a 2217.

I have two Eheim ECCOs under my tank. They are completely silent. The only noise I hear is from the water outlets. I have the outlets pointed up a little and they burble on the surface (a peaceful sound IMO). Obviously you wouldn't hear even that if the outlets pointed down.

Priming the ECCO is super easy. You just pull the handle down and it fills up. Push it back up and pull it down once more, then plug it in and it starts pumping away. The valves are included and work well, with no leaks except maybe a tablespoon of water that escapes just when you disconnect them.

I am running 2 Eheim ECCOS and 1 Eheim pro3E in my living room I don't hear anything even when the room is complete silent. I have to put my ear next to the filter to make sure it is running. RENA XP2 and XP3 are super silent too...

my emperor 400 makes more nosie than my fan at full speed!!!!

I have a 60g freshwater tank w/ 2 Eheim 2026 pro11 canisters. (Each rated for 90 gallons, I keep messy goldfish and my tank sparkles)
I hear nothing.
They have a self-prime feature.
They have an output flow control.
They have a quick disconnect feature.
They do not leak.
I would'nt trade them for anything else.

I also have a 55g freshwater tank w/an Eheim Ecco 2234 canister. (rated for 60 gallons)
I cannot hear it.
Self prime feature.
The disconnect is simple. Unplug it. Turn off the two valves at the canister (intake & output) Unscrew from canister. Done. Not too difficult.
No leaks. Just a Tablespoon of water at initial disconnect.
This tank also has a Penguin 350 biowheel for additional mechanical filtration. (messy goldfishies)

I have an Eheim 2126 Pro II for my Malawi cichlid tank for the last 3.5 yrs, and I would agree it's a great filter for this 75 gal tank. It's extremely quiet (the rena air pump makes more noise), easy to service and change filter media.

I did recently experience a leak problem with it though. See this post for more info.
