I have a couple of Eheim Ecco 2232 filters on some smaller tanks. These are the North America versions with the solid Blue coarse filter pad.
I recently ordered an Eheim Ecco 2234 (slightly larger version) online and was sent an Ecco Pro 2234 which seems to be the European marketed version instead.
Now from the outside they look identical (all external fittings, handle and hoses seem the same as well as the two prong plug) but there are differences once you open the filter up.
The American version has White baskets with the White fine pad in the top basket and the Blue coarse solid pad in the bottom basket with substrate in between them.
The European version has a ring shaped (hole in middle) Blue coarse pad on the top in a seperate container with the White fine pad in another tapered seperate container under that with the substrate basket(s) underneath. All the seperate containers and baskets are Black instead of White.
The total height of all the baskets and containers seems to be the same so they are probably interchangable between versions and they both use the same White fine pads. The Blue coarse pads are the same diameter and a solid one could be converted if manually you cut out the middle.
I also noticed that the bottom of the filter head on the Ecco Pro version has some small fins that the Ecco version does not have which I think help center the container holding the Blue coarse pad with the hole.
If you go to Eheim's web page and select a North America location you see the Ecco's manual and if you select German location you see the Ecco Pro's manual.
I am unclear why there are two different Ecco internal designs with their corresponding Blue coarse filters and whether there are any other minor differences between the models.
In the American Ecco version the intake water is pulled up through a Blue solid coarse filter then through substrate and finally the White fine filter before being expelled.
In the European Ecco Pro version the intake water in pushed down through the ring shaped Blue coarse pad (with smaller total area) and then pulled up through substrate and finally the White fine filter before being expelled.
I was not expecting to receive an Ecco Pro version and I was wondering if anyone has experience with the European Ecco Pro models or knows of any other differences?
I am unclear if the American online store that sent it just ordered the wrong Ecco filters from their Eheim distributor or whether the Ecco Pro with its modfiied design is going to replace the original Eccos (since it seems to have an American style two prong plug).
It is my understanding that the Eccos have already changed once before and that they originally had slightly different model numbers and design although I am unclear if that pertained to the European models.
