I am upgrading to a 55 g tank looking at Cannister filters. I have not completely decided on stocking but I do know that I will have only fish and no live plantings. I have read many of the posts concerning cannisters filters and have settled on an Ehiem (Which I know many of you will be  ).

Based on everything I have read, either the Ecco (Model 2234) or the Classic Model 2213) will work. What, in your opionion, is the difference between the two and why would I want one over the other, with price out of the picture?

Found more threads on this topic in this forum and many of you said the Classic is the better way to go. Since this is my first cannister and, I admit, sometimes I 'forgo' regular cleaning, is it still my best bet?

I chose the Classic over the Ecco due to issues I'd read about the Ecco's priming handle breaking over the long-term. Classics sounded like they better stood the test of time and I've been happy with them so far.

As far as the 2213 model, it may not be enough for a 55 gallon tank (even though it says its rated to 66 gallons) unless you get 2 of them. I have 2213s running on my 20 gallon planted tanks and probably wouldn't use that model to filter more than maybe a 30 gallon tank. You'll be happier in the long run with the 2215 or even the 2217 model.
