Hi Folks-

I am a teacher for the federal government and I inherited a 150 gallon fresh tank with 5 cichlids being filtered by a Eheim Professionel II. The tank is doing quite well and the fish seem hardy and happy. Our problem is that occasionally the power quits in the classroom and when it does, the water syphons out of the tank and runs out of the filter onto the floor. One day, the tank lost about five gallons before I noticed! Is this a fact of life or is there something wrong with the filter? The filter is about 2.5 feet below the tank and doesn't leak at all when running. I understand the physics, but it seems that if the filter is sealed, this shouldn't be happening. The other teachers want to unload the tank because of this issue, but the kids love it and I'd hate to give it up because we're not smart enough to resolve the issue.

I've been out of the fish hobby since I was 17 (I'm 44 now), so I think I classify as a newbie.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

well it siphones out because there is a leak and the filter is lower than the tank of course, but I don't understand how the filter would not leak when it is on. Sounds defective, but since it is eheim all parts are replacable.

Leak must be on the intake portion, otherwise I would imagine it would be shooting water all over if it was on the output side.

Guess you will need to investigate where the water is leaking from and go from there.

My bet is it an issue they had a number of years ago with the piece that connects the hoses and the filter. They had a defective series of these and did free replacements. I got one but then the leak stopped itself before i used the replacement. About 4 months back I cleaned it and when i reassembled it, the leak reappeared. I used the replacement part and its fine again.

I am aware of somebody who recently had a similar problem with an older pPro II and managed to get the free replacement. You should contact Eheim via their site: http://www.eheim.com/
