Hey, I have a small 5.5g planted tank (2x15w CF bulbs for 5.4wpg) but don't use CO2. I use Excel instead for my carbon source. The EI method suggests that you should have 30ppm of CO2, but since I'm only using Excel will it still work out? Right now I'm dosing double the recommended amount of Excel (1ml per day) and growth has been decent, but not great so far. I have my macro nutrients ready to start dosing though (KNO3, KH2PO4, K2SO4). Should I continue with the 1ml of Excel per day, or will I be short on carbon causing an algae outbreak? Thanks.

The EI method works with nutrients so can be used on any lighting, or CO2/non CO2.

Excel will be fine on your tank as the carbon source, and on a tank of 5.5g it is the way I would do it. I would closely follow the instructions on the bottle and not go overboard with overdosing.

Be careful as some plants, like Anacharis, are very sensitive to Flourish Excel and will die if exposed to it.

You can dose 2x a week and about 1/2 the rate of suggested amounts.

You can also do a 75% water change as easily as a 50% on such a small tank.

So you can keep the levels closer to the dosing amounts.
