I have a 5" electric yellow lab he is very healthy and has great color but sometimes his face looks brown or dirty only at certian times. Other times the face is its regular bright yellow. I dont know if this may be a factor but he tends to hide in the rocks alot and seems very shy, and will often hide when someone approches the tank. He is alone does he need a mate to encourage him to come out more? I would like to know what may be wrong with him.

Hard to say without more info, but my rusties and yellow labs are shy and hide a lot.

My rusties stayed hid almost all the time until I added the labs. The new fish seemed to bring them out a lot more.

Labs are a very social fish, and relatively peaceful (for cichlids) and I believe he would benefit from have a couple more of his own kind in the tank.

Good filtration, correct ph, and frequent water changes are very important for labs.

yeah mine hides alot to here lately...but i have him in a tank with two terrors....im workin on movin him to my 30 gallon hoping to have 1 male and 2 females :dance

My yellow lab shows his 'dirty face' sometimes... its perfectly natural. I call it his 5 o'clock shadow :D Its just a natural pigmentation.. some fish have it and some dont.

They turn it off and on to show thier moods, whether they are defensive or scared or horny ;).... thier colors indicate how they are feeling.

I noticed my yellow cichlid does that too. But its only when I come near the tank
"They turn it off and on to show thier moods, whether they are defensive or horny .... thier colors indicate how they are feeling." Guess I'm one studly guy!! LOL
It worried me at first but now I know my fish are just gettin horny off of me!(just playing) really though I dont think its much to worry about. Seems to be a characteristic of my fish so I go along with it.
