Electric Yellow wish MAJOR jaw issue. Need solid help/advice, have footage

I am so so so sorry you lost him. I tried so hard to find SOMETHING that may help, but I really do think it must have been bacterial, and not easily treatable either. I think it must have entered through the wounds he got the first time you noticed his off jaw. It must have gotten into the bone. This is very rare, but it happens. It happens to every type of animal on the planet. Opportunistic infection they call it. I am so sorry. I know how much it sucks. Don't give up. It's easy for me to say, but really I have been there. My guppies were nearly wiped out by cotton and fin rot, I was so devastated. Then the cotton came back and I wanted to throw in the towel. I am so sorry I could not be of better help.

Thanks so much Maribeth. i really appreciate the effort of you searching for me and the condolences. Had him since 2003 so it was pretty tough to say goodbye. Your theory makes sense. Opportunistic bacteria can feed off of wounds and weakened flesh. the lower jaw disappeared overnight. it was so disgusting as u saw and heartbreaking to see. he never came up to the glass like that facing me, due to the one bad eye. always off to the side so he could see me better. so it was like he was asking for help and trying to show me what's going on. :( i will try to hang in there with the fish. i had gotten a baby yellow to keep him company because he seemed lonely. so maybe i'll get another yellow to keep this one company, and a few keyhole cichlids since they're peaceful. i'm so over the national geographic killing tanks. Take care and thanks again for your concern, effort and well wishes

excuzzzeme: yes i agree they don't live near 20 years. one or two years tops. i hear you, not enough hours in the day. good luck on your travels, and congrats on surviving the stroke of 05. Take care

You're welcome. I actually didn't find it disgusting, just devastating. It broke my heart, and other people will say, oh it's just a fish. It is not just a fish, they are our friends, they are our hobby and we put so much care and attention into them that losing them is awful. You should get another yellow when you are ready, and I love keyhole cichlids, they would look great with the yellows. I hear you on the killing tanks. Take care and good luck!

Most of the members here share that same sentiment, Outside of the hobby you might find more of the "just a fish" mentality simply because they have no idea how much effort we put into them. I think that overall I spend more effort on my fish than I do on our cat and dog (even though I think I spend more money on them than the fish).

Thanks for the congratulations on surviving. The fish have been very therapeutic for me so I owe them a bit of gratitude as well.

Electric yellows aren't much of a schooling type fish. They are fairly territorial instead. Getting another "friend" for the one you have is likely to be OK if it is of the opposite sex.

Good luck on your future with the fish.

That is why I love it here!!:thm:

I'm really sorry for your loss. On a side not if the jaw disintigrated over a day that's pretty quick. I'm not sure if i think it's bacterial because what bacteria will only go after the jaw and stop after that??? For this to be a bacterial infection i feel that the wasting would be more wide spread instead of localized. An opportunistic infection would make sense i guess but again it's interesting that the disease stayed localized and didn't propagate.

Sorry for your loss. There was a flesh eating bacteria that got into my mbuna tank and seemed to cause the smallest wound to rot away. I lost many fish and it was heart breaking. This looks like something similar. One of my mbuna had his mouth rot away in the exact same way and it hit fast.
For your current yellow lab I would get a few more. Labs are social fish and not as territorial as other mbuna. They won't mind the gender ratios as much since they are more peaceful than most mbuna. I have found they do well in groups of 5 or more.

I know, I was absolutely stumped. I could not find anything that was remotely similar in terms of known fish disease. I am very stumped. The other fish don't have it, including the other yellow, so it had to be specific to that fish. Thats why bacterial opportunistic infection was the only thing I could come up with. It is so sad and so strange. Maybe someone will have a bit more insight, or information, or a similar experience...something. Sometimes though, like with MRSA, the bacterial infection is localized, but if it gets into the blood stream, it's a killer for humans. Do you think it could be something like that?? I think it must be, or we are not looking in the right places for info, although I looked for hours... I now know more about mouth rot than I ever wanted to... :shakehead:, hopefully someone else will weigh in...:(

I feel if the infection got into the blood the fish would have died a lot sooner and looked much worse. Here is an idea. What if during your surgery you nicked a artery or when the lab got injured blood supply was stopped to the jaw.

this would cause the jaw to start wasting away because it was just dead tissue that was being broken down.

This would also explain why the other fish were not harmed.

I'm sorry for you loss.

one thing I thought of, I have no idea if it can effect fish or not, is phossy jaw. Many match factory workers got this from the over exposure to phosphorous while making match heads. Thats what it reminded me of, just a out of left field thought.
