Electric Yellow won't eat...

I bought a 1 3/4" electric yellow cichlid at the LFS. He'd been there for a long while fighting with a 'sunset peacock' cichlid 3 times his size for the one cave they offered in the tank. I made the classic error and bought him out of sympathy.

Don't get me wrong. I'm wanting and preparing to create a cichlid tank of my very own. It's something I've been wanting for a while now. I want to do a very dramatic, diachromatic yellow and blue scheme with electric yellows and a blue striped cichlid who's name escapes me at the moment. Through extensive research, I've come to understand they grow to be about 4 inches in total length. I've also researched that they have similar pH preferences AND that I should be able to acclimate my bichir to live amongst them as well in my larger aquarium.

I say this to let everyone know it is **NOT** my intention to leave him in his current situation. That said, 'Lem' is currently habitating a 10-gallon with an albino corydoras and my 4-inch senegal bichir. I've had him since yesterday morning. He trailed around behind my cory for a long time and now he seems to be trying to stake out a hidey-hole for himself. I don't think the one I provided is dark enough for him, so he looks a little.... uncomfortable?

Other than that, he is proving a bit tricky to feed. I intend to ask the lfs what they fed him before (I had a bit of an emergency call me when I bought him, so I got flustered and forgot to ask) and the only food he's accepted so far was a few little tidbits of cooked shrimp, but only when he saw it floating around in the water. I haven't been able to find a cichlid pellet that would be small enough for him to eat at any of the stores I've looked in so far.

Any suggestions?

*** Note, I understand that cories like to be in groups. I understand that the cichlid will need more growing room. I understand that the senegal will eventually be up to 18 inches long. As I've said, the situation is temporary. I'm well on the way to setting up a 36 gallon aquarium and am saving up for something 100g+ in the near future. Please keep in mind their situation is as temporary as I can make it and I have full intentions of looking out for their well-being in any way I can until then.

Try to find NLS Cichlid formula. Here is a picture. They are small little pellets that he should be able to eat. Also, if you haven't tried, he might eat some veggie flakes. Mine eat pretty much anything I put in the tank. Africans are best kept in groups IMO, so that may be a reason he isn't eating.

Yellow labs are Mbuna, which are rock dwellers. You might want to make some caves out of rock. That might make him more comfortable.

Oh thankyou!!

They had him in a bare tank with some cichlid called a 'sunset peacock' with one cave. He was a third of the size of the other guy and was fighting with him for that one plastic cave. I've been wanting to start keeping cichlids and I've every intention of getting him some fellow labs once my 36er is up and running. I live near Texas, so I have access to that holey rock they love so much. I intend to spoil my cichs rotten once I get them set up. For now, I just want to make them comfy until that tank is ready and I can expand on my fishies more.

Thank you SO MUCH for your advice!!! I will keep those suggestions in mind!! The more I think of it, the more I think he'll eat better once he's got himself a 'hidey-hole' staked out for his own and he's settled down. I just don't like any of my fishes to not be fat and sassy... ^_^

I'd wager to say my senegal bichir eats better than I do half the time!!!

Yellow Labs in my experience are not very fussy on food. They realy seem to like micro granuals and sinking pellets.

I'm just nervous. This is my first time dabbling in fish other than the common, everyday community types. Even though my aunt and uncle bred kribensis and convicts in their home (and I helped), they were never successful with their yellows and they always seemed so shy and you never saw them. I think it was because they only had one cave in a VERY noisy and brightly lit aquarium. But theirs ate cichlid flakes and seemed to do well enough.

I just wanted to be sure I was doind all in my power to make sure 'Lem' gets proper care until his bigger home is ready for him.

FYI P.senegalus tend to max out around 12 inches

I've received so many different answers on how big they grow to in captivity. I've been told everything from 10-18 inches... O__o;;
