Wiring up a DIY hood.

Heres what i got.

A dual fluorescent lamp. It came pre wired with housings and everything. Onlything that wasnt wired is.

1. Green, black, white wire.

I guess the black and white goes into the outlet. But what about the green? It says its a ground, but aint thats the first time i seen a ground wire other then black. I mostly work on cars so yeah...=p

So wireing up the black and whites only will make them both light up. But heres where it gets confusing.

I want to wire up a switch to each bulb, so i can have one on at a time, or both on. So, all togeather is two switches.

Now...what wire do i splice into to be able to do this?

Heres a diagram for everyone to get on the same page. Its a diagram i copyed off the sticker on the ballast. Hope it helps and makes my life easyer.

P.S. Do i need a starter? Cause the switches i am using is a flip type switch, not a button.

Forget what you know about cars. That is direct current and your hood is alternating current.

The color codes for AC current is:
Green = ground
White = common
Black = hot
Red = hot

The ballast is the starter. You will need to buy two single bulb ballasts if you want them on separate switches. You can do what you are thinking with the original ballast but it will fry the switches and the ballast eventually. The ballast kicks up the voltage so that the bulbs can start. The switches will spark inside like the forth of July. This will burn up the contacts in record time.
