I've had my BIG tank for over a year now and have never had an electricity bill like the one I got last week, I rang the company and they told me that keeping fish tanks especially ones with heaters can use up to $100 of electricity a quarter! I find this hard to believe!
Anyone have any comments?

I remember that there was a thread here that looked at this..

basically if you take the wattage of everything associated with your tank, add it all together, multiply by 24, and devide by 1000 you should get the kilowatt-hours used by your tank each day (assuming worst case, heater and lights on constantly). You should have a cost per kwh from your electric company, multiply the 2 to get maximum cost per day.

hmm fish tanks dont cost that much .. we just added an oiled filled electric heater and had one running for a month and ours just only went up $30 from last month .. not to mention we have had 6 tanks running with heaters ..and lights ..even the month before it didnt go up much ..just a few dollars...
mayb there is something else you have been running that ya over looked ..

My electric bill has never gone up. I run 2 mh for 8hrs. a day. My tank is in the basement so the heater is on at least 16 hrs. a day to keep the tank running at 81.

Let us not forget electricity is one of the things that now costs more because of oil being more expensive... le sigh.
