I had originally wanted a black ghost knife as the "oooh ahhh" and the occasional "look at that, thats weird!" fish in the tank. But I have been discouraged because of the lack of combatability with my blue rams. I now have an elephant nose in mind. If somebody could give me some tips and advice on these it would be much appretiated.

It's funny that I keep follow your threads like a...ghost ;)

I happen to love elephant noses as well, and had kept 2 different species in the past: the common (lower lip extended) and the "double-trunk" one.

I guess the first tip I can offer would be how to get one: it would be best to pick one from a group, since you can spot the "alpha" one easily. That's usually the strongest and most healthy one, since it has been the one that takes the best spot in the tank, gobble most of the good food, and creates havoc to others.

They have flat body, but the healthy ones are not that flat: body cross-section is more like a football! Many of them have been starved in the dealer tank and are paper thin (looking down from top) that you should avoid them. They are pretty common (accept for the double-trunk), so don't settle for a bad one...

They must be fed with live or fronzen food, or they will get skinny and wasting away...

They also require excellent water quality like the blackghost or rams.

They are excellent jumper. One of mine died because of that. The other died when I had to travel oversea for a long period that I could not maintain the live feeding and water quality..

Lastly, they are very intelligent fish, and although they won't eat the rams, a large elephant-nosed can easily bullying everybody in the tank (that I really could not figure out how: the fish doesn't even have teeth!)
