I just bought an emperor 280 for my new 37 gal tank. It says it will cycle 280 gals of water an hour, but the flow dosnt look like it will achieve that kind of flow! Ive never had a biowheel before and I may be over reacting so I wanted to ask. I keep my fish like I keep my kids (LOL) so Im kind of worried. :coffee2:

Over filtration is often best. Many of the filters usually have disclaimers on the boxes, in the instructions, that state the flow is at ideal conditions and with little or no media involved. Most flow rates probably (IMO IME) are at best 50-60%, when up and running completely assembled, of the claimed values.
I wouldn't even know where to begin to guess my actual gph flow, thats why I usually just run 2 oversized filters it has to atleast match what I was aiming for.

Because of the top brace on the 37 gallon, we put two Emperor 280's on the tank. We intitially wanted to use the 400 but it doesn't fit.
LIke others here, I am a big fan of "over-filtration". Cleaner water, happier fish, less time between filter maintenance, and backup systems if one should fail.

I've been running the 280 on my 36 gallon bow front since day one. It works quite well. I've not had any issues thus far. THough its about time to replace my BIO-Wheel & filter.
It will look like its not flowing much, but it should be sufficent. My water is clear and healthy.

Is there any particular reason why you think it is time to replace the bio-wheel? This is where most of your beneficial bacteria is and you definitely do not want to change it unless there is a real problem, such as it got ripped apart by your cat (if you have one) or something.
Wel;l actually I may be able to get away with cleaning it off a bit (with my Python). It has some rather nasty, brown substance on it that tends to fall into the water. That was the only reason.ROLLIN said:
