Hi gang. I have had a 10 gal for over a year, so I'm kind of an "experienced " noob ! I do need some help, tho. I just bought a 46 gal bowfront and purchased an Emperor 400 bio wheel filter for it. I 'm getting it set up and I see there are 4 slots for filter media prior to the wheels. The 2 slots on the left were empty, and the 2 on the right had empty filter media holders. The ones on the left had a bag with 2 charcoal cartridges (size E) that I assume go in the 2 slots ? What goes in the 2 media holders on the right side ? Can someone tell me what goes where ? Thanx for the help. I guess I should have asked at the store, but I figured (incorrectly, it turns out !) the directions would help me. The pet store is 50 miles away or I'd go ask them ! Thanx again.:newbie:

the two blue filter that comes in a bag goes to the back (one for the left, and one for the right), and the 2 empty cases are for you to fill it with whatever media you want (activiated carbons mostly, not included with the filter), one for the left and one for the right at the front slot.
There should be instruction/diagram on how to place those filter in the slot.

You have a couple options. There are two slots on each side so you can put a media container in each slot and and a filter pad/charcoal cartridge in each slot. Or you can do option two which I choose on the dozen or so emperor filters I run. Option 2 being get more filter cartridges and fill all four slots with them. If you use the media containers put them Closest to the biowheel. The blue and black filter cartridges always go in the slot farther from the bio wheels or else the media containers can get debris in them. The other choice you have is to put some type of filter floss or quilt batting in the media containers and use them as particle filters. Best bet imo is get more cartridges and run all 4 slots with them. If you do an emperor 400 will particle filter quite well.

As already said, a charcoal filter cartridge goes into one slot in both sides of the filter. I run my Emporers with Fluval foam filter cartridges (the 204/304 size) in the first slot, then put the charcoal cartridge in the 2nd slot right before the biowheels. Two Fluval foam cartridges come to a box and fit perfectly side by side to fill a slot. The Fluval foam catches large debris and keeps it from fouling the charcoal cartridge so fast. The fluval foam also then becomes additional biological filter for the tank and they get rinsed of gunk and put back into the filter when I clean the filters. The fluval foam will last probably forever and won't need to be replaced.

Thanx for the help and suggestions, gang. After reading your comments, and checking out the attached link, I realize that I did NOT receive an owners manual with my filter. So, I copied and downloaded the attached file and I am good to go ! Thanx again ! While I've got your attention (?), and I hope I don't get in trouble for asking, anyone know where I might pick up a couple of zebra plecos (L046, I believe) ? Thanx again.:shark:

emperor 400

that is the same filter i use and i love it. go to Drs. foster and smith website and they have the filter media to put in the empty holes. they are called bio3 filter cartridges. Get the 24 pk and you will get 2 new plastic containers. it is well worth the money:headbang2:

Thanx for all the help gang !!
