Endler/guppy mix?

Dr. Endler argues that the species he took samples of was in fact a seperate species, but that all of what we see in pet stores today are some form of hybrid. So either way, it's gotten to the point that it doesn't really matter. What I find in pet stores as endlers are either a form of guppy, or guppy hydrid (most likely). I'm probably just going to get feeder guppies anyway... is it probable that endlers would have a lower rate of infection? I'll pay extra to get the pretty ones if it will help keep my angels safer.. either way, they'll be qt'd for a month, and then bred.

With endler/guppy hybrids, it is a very common practice. Esentially, when you cross these two fish, the offspring will have the most vibrant colors. SHow Guppy Breeders essentially do the same thing, but they use wild guppies to enhance guppies. So if you have some extr endlers and guppies. Cross them and see the color.

i heard that endlers and guppys are closely related and that people breed the male endlers with female guppys because the female guppys have more color than the female endlers

I tell you, I crossed a tiny but vibrant wild male gup with a green cobra female and you should SEE the baby that came out of it... It has a green cobra tail and snakeskin effect with a bright orange body... Definitely a worthy cross. Plop right in the male show tank lol.

I am planning to add some endler blood to my guppies just for added body color.

Well, there is debate on whether or not Endler's Livebearers are simply a variation of guppies or if they are truly a separate species. However, they can and do interbreed. That's why you have to be so careful if you are looking for true Endlers because they are often, usually unknowingly, crossed with guppies.

Endlers are also referred to as "Endler's Guppy" due to the lack of absolute class definition.

You will find "True Endler's" being offered in the trade but because of the things others have pointed out, it is difficult at best to guarantee such claims. Even many DNA markers are shared making the picture even less clear.

So in a nutshell, yes, endler's and guppies will interbreed.

Yeah, I'm probably repeating something, but they can easily hybridize, as Endler's are actually a subspecies of the silly little Poecilidae we know as guppies. However, most aquarists avoid this in order not to dilute the Endler stock, as, correct me if I'm wrong, their relatively threatened in the wild.:lipssealedsmilie:

Most say they are separate subspecies.

I'm going with they are distinct species, which can and will hybridize both in captivity and in the wild.

Of course, in your home aquarium you can rarely be certain of what you have, it's entirely likely that you have some sort of hybrid anyway.

The pic posted looks to me like a guppy of some sort.
