I was looking into good fish for smaller tanks and have seen some beautiful pictures of Endler's livebearers. Unfortunately I cannot get much info on them other than the fact that they are close relatives of guppies. Has anyone had experience with them? I was wondering if they might do well with a small gouramie pair and maybe a Cory or two?

Also I was wondering about mixing cory species. I will soon be getting a lone albino cory form a family member. It had a buddy that mysteriously died over a month ago. Does it need a companion? I have only ever kept the albino kind, and always in a small group.

I know there is an endler expert around here somewhere, so you should get some good info. soon!! As for the cory, IME they like to have their own type for company. I have a group of spotted juli type corys and a group of green corys and they do not ever hang out together, they form 2 separate groups. They definately like company, I would get at least 2 more!

What size tank do you have? The endlers might be ok with dwarf gouramis, but some of the gouramis that get bigger might make a snack out of them!!

It's just a little ten gallon. So, I'm really tring to be careful with what I pick. I would love a couple of gouramis, but my better jugdement is saying that maybe a few schooling fish (like endler's) and a few corys (that are wonderful little fish) might be may max. If i did try to add the gouramis what do you think might be a good time to add them? A week or two after a few small schooling fish?

Holly covered the cories pretty well. There are some types of cories that stay pretty small. I think they are pygmy and panda cories. Don't know too much about them though.

For endlers, they are a very hardy and easy fish to care for. Usually the hardest part is finding pure strains. Whatever you do, make sure to keep them away from guppies! Cross-bredding is not good.

I used to feed my endlers crushed up tetra colorbits, flakes, frozen hikari daphnia (very small), and some larger foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp too. I also fed them hikari first bites, a powdered food. They can take colder water and a heater is not necessary. I kept my tank around 74 with a heater usually.

They are easy to breed. Try to keep at least 2 females for every male. They don't eat their babies unlike most livebearers. Although if you have cories or gouramies with them they will be eaten. This could be an effective form of population control though, and provide high quality food too.

Can I expect them to be little breeding mashines?

maybe you could do one dwarf gourami (I hear it can be hard to find females and 2 males might fight), 3 albino corys (since you already have one), and 4-5 endlers? The DG should help keep the population down if they do breed. Then again, maybe you just skip the gourami and just get the endlers, they are so pretty, I think they deserve their own setup (with the corys) :dance2:

I think either of those combos sound nice. I'll I'll be checking in with my LFS to see what is currently or soon to be avalible. I hope that someone can point me toward some endler's. When things get set up maybe I can send in some colorfully fishie pistures.

Yes, Endlers are breeding machines. They also do not eat their own fry, so the fry survive very well. I would suggest getting all males if you don't want to deal with all the young. For Cories I would suggest Pandas, Pygmys, or Dainty cories. Stick with one species however. Look into getting some Cherry shrimp if you want for algea control, or a couple otos. Other than the cories, instead maybe look into some Kuhli loaches.

I only have Fry availble right now for endlers (which aren't sexable yet), you might want to try Tricksterpup and see if he has any adults or sexable fry.

Sadly, I do not have the time to ship out any fish, now if you live in MN and near the twin cities, I would be happy to give you a nice trio.

But keeping them with Cories should not be a problem. And yes, I agree with NT, stay with one species, it makes every one happy. :)
