Despite that I've been trying every once in a while to breed my catfish, I got told I am not supposed to breed them.
This is because there have been enough fish bred in the household and they don't want any more.

They mean fish bred by another family member. I think this is totally unfair. My tanks were tied up with their fish so I couldn't breed my fish for a long time...and now that enough of their fish have died off, I am able to make more attempts with mine. Shared tanks are not so fun when other peoples' fish take them over, but what I could do?...they were feeding mine when I wasn't living there...so I had to put up with the nonsense and share my tanks.
My tanks had eight fish that were mine and at some points in time, over a hundred of theirs.

NOW I think it's finally my turn to breed my fish, even if just once.

How can they stop it from happening...?

that's weird. i can understand saying, don't breed puppies at my house, because that would mean a lot of work and a lot of mess and expense to take care of puppies. but fish? they stay in the tank. . . .

Right and I don't plan to keep all of the babies like they mostly did.

hmmmmm.......

as a fishkeeper in a family household i believe you need the buy in of other family members....after all

- you are messy when maintaining the tanks
- your tanks take up a lot of room
- you spend a lot of time on your hobby you should really spend with your family
- you spend a lot of money on your hobby which may be frowned upon

So, absolutely you ned the buy in from the family. Going behind their back will clealry make it worse for you long term.

The time for being patient is now.

Work on them, be salesman, good salesmen seel the benefits - fab model:

F for fetures...beautiful tank
A for advantages...your time is spent in a fulfilling and rewarding way
B for benefit....sell them the beefits...hit their emotional side...babies (mums all love babies right)....the beauty of the creation of life, earning your own money and learning to live.....
