anybody put together a freshwater aquarium with everything but fish? i mean some crabs, some frogs, some crayfish, some snails
some shrimp, maybe a turtle [but i here they are quite poop-riffic]
and perhaps a salamander? what else could go in? anybody tried it? what gets along with what?

Right now I have a terrarium with a toad, two aquatic frogs, small snails, and a guppy (a fish so I guess he can't count :) ).

Unless you have an incredibly docile crayfish I would be wary of putting them with any amphibian, or crabs smaller than themselves. It is also not recommended to keep more than one of them for an extended time in small aquariums.

Also some species of newts will fight, or were those salamander.. I dunno but my gf used to work at a pet store and one species would kill the other everytime they reordered, she put a stop to that.

I always wanted to try a large terrarium with "halloween" crabs and a blue crayfish.

I have separate aquariums setup for my non fish critters. 2 fire belly newts in one, an african clawed frog in another. A few snails in each tank as well.
