my mystery snail has been half-way tucked inside his shell for a few days now. I poked him a couple of times gently, but he didn't move. Not even a bit. Even when I touched his eye--he didn't recoil or anything. When I took him out of the water, he didn't even twitch. I decided to just put him in a floating breeding confinement in my tank, so my frog and betta couldn't nip at him in his "weird" stage. I just left him there because I didn't know if he was dead or not, and I made sure the lid of the breeding confinement was off so he could go up for air if he needed to. Anyway, I came home from school today and he has MOLD on him. He's still in the same position he was a couple of days ago. I guess he's really dead now, right? and I should take him out of the tank before the mold harms my fish? thanks..:(

no..then again, I didn't snill too closely because I don't want to breath in those icky mold spores... but he is so still...even his meat sticking out..... like a rock..can I dispose of him?

He was deffinately dead when he was stuck halfway out of his shell. You should do a few WCs. Don't get too close when you take him out, he'll be rank by now.

I would think its probably safe to dispose of him. I usually freeze them even if I think they are dead, just to be on the safe side. They can sometimes hang half out of their shell and its normal....the mold/fungus look, not normal.

his flesh wasn't floating, though..it was just as if he was about to tuck into his shell and then..FREEZE FRAME!!

That's how all of my snails went when they died. I like to check mine whenever there's any little gap between the foot and the shell, and they haven't changed position for a while. I would wager, especially with the mold (fungus?), that he is long dead.

ok thanks dp and jinkzd--I took him out like 10 seconds ago. he didn't move, as expected.

For future reference, if I see mold on a snail, can I assume it is dead?
