I am changing from an internal submerged pump to an external pump on the return from the sump. Reasons for this are many including needing more gph return, high heat transfer with the current submerged (quiet one 4000) and no more room in the sump for anything bigger/better.

So... the question... in your opinion and experience, which external pumps are the best? By best I mean coolest running, reliable, quiet, energy efficient, quality made, yadda yadda yadda. I'm looking at a return of about 1000 gph at about 4' but may need to use a ball valve to regulate to the right return that my overflow can handle.

Iwaki pumps, from experience with them, VERY reliable and can even run dry a short time without damage.

Thanks for the advise and after a quick look, I kinda narrowed it down to 3 to look at further... the Iwaki MD55RLT, the GenX/Mak4 and Coralife Turbo-sea 1100P but I've not heard anything about any of these except for the highest $ Iwaki. Anyone have experience with these other two? The Iwaki costs almost 2x the GenX and about $100 more than the Coralife... is it that good? I know the saying 'you get what you pay for' but...

Thats why I say Iwaki, you might wanna search for cheaper than what you quoted, usually can find em around $150 depending on what you are looking for.
