Fancy Goldfish

My wife has been harrassing me to get her some fancy goldfish for her 29 gallon All glass tank... well I thought that these fish would get to big for that size of a tank but I wanted confirmation...


How big do these guys get???


Are there any that would go in a 29 gallon aquarium???

so you do not think that one fancy goldfish with an 8" pleco would do good...


Filtration: 2 Whisper 3 filters...

Water changes every two weeks...
 
It depends on the type of fancy goldfish, some types can grow to 12". The smaller types are celestial and bubble eyes. One large goldfish and an 8" pleco would be too much for a 29 gallon tank. I would suggest that if you really want to keep goldfish in that size tank to keep only one. Also you will need to do water changes more than once evey two weeks, especially as the goldfish grows larger. I would suggest you do water changes twice a week.

well i have more than 10 happy goldfish in my tank.

these goldfishes have been happy and healthy for at least 9 months now. prior to that they were living in a 1 gallon, then 10 gallon and now upgraded...........

Ten GF in a two foot long tank? Sure you may be able to keep them alive, but happy and healthy? I am not so sure about that. I saw your web site where you said "* Please do not try to talk to me about issues concerning 'overstock', 'ph', 'kh', 'tank size' and whatever other issues concerning my tank setup. ". Regardless of what you seem to believe that tank is way overstocked. Those fish may survive but I doubt they thrive. Have they doubled in size since you got them? GF that small should easily do that or more in 9 monthes. My three Ryukins are 6+ inches long and I have them in a 65 gallon tank (48x18x18 ) all to themselves. That is just there winter home. The rest of the year they live in a 300 gallon pond. The only way I could see this setup even remotely producing healthy fish is to have a constant flow of water through that tank changeing its volume 2 or 3 times a day. But hey this is all just my two cents worth.
 
Opinions differ, but you do not need tanks in the 100s of gallons to keep goldfish. They get big....they are "messy"...they like to eat, etc., etc, etc, etc. However, they are also colorful, active fish that develop real pet-like qualities.

Thanks to modern filtration and maintenance practices, you can probably keep two (maybe three) of the smaller, slower varieties like ryunkins, orandas, moors, fantails. Avoid comets, shubunkins, wakins, etc.

Double the "recommended" filtration rate (e.g, emporer 280 combined with AC200 or 300.)

Regular water changes

Let algea grow on the back wall (use black background)

If you really get into goldfish and purchase show quality fish, then increase the gallons per fish to 20-30G.

Two (possibly three) fancy goldfish would look great in a 29/30G tank.

I think even two goldies in a 29gallon is pushing it.

I would stick with one goldfish in the 29 and NO pleco. Plecos are tropical and goldies are coldwater. The pleco will also suck the sides of the goldfish.
