Fancy Guppy species tank?? Help please!

Yeah I love fancy guppies!! They are so colorful! How can you tell the diff. between male and female?
Niko (Reefscape) can probably be the best in this determination, don't let him fool you, he's been breeding these guys for years!

The ones with the fancy tails are the males. The females are very plain and show very little color, have a rounded belly, and a dark spot above the anal fins called gravid spots. (One on each side). The gravid spots will normally be black until it has fry on board and then the lighten up slightly. Sometimes you can see the fry's eyes through it. female guppies you get from anywhere are usually "pre-hit". Meaning they are already pregnant. One pairing can result in 4 broods as a female can hold the males sperm and self-fertilize. You expect to have a new brood about every 6-8 weeks. (Not absolute) mine went a year before the first brood. Then it went non-stop for about 18 months. I no longer keep females and males in the same tank unless I am running out. At which time I will allow them to breed and at some point i get all new males or all new females to prevent too much in-breeding. After new blood is in I allow them to breed again.

The females and other adults will eat the newborn fry. They must be removed from the parents. Buy a breeding net and isolate the fry in it. Don't put the mother in it as she will stress too much and will reabsorb the eggs. When my female is about to pop I put her in a 5 gallon by herself and keep her fed. After birthing, I move her back to the main female guppy tank. I grow out the guppies in the 5 gal until they can take regiular flake. If I end up with too many I take them to LFS.to trade in or just to get rid of them. Anything that has a birth defect becomes cichlid food.

I do not do selective breeding. They are what they are. I am not a fancier but just have them for the color and activity in the tank..

Look at their anal fins. Males have a modified anal fin that allows them to pass packets of sperm to the female during mating.

As MrGoodbytes stated, the males have an anal fin that is pointed toward the the tail. Females have nice round "normal" looking anal fins.
