Alright - my favorite guy at the LFS is leaving and starting his own (hours from here boo hoo) and I keep thinking of things I want him to do in the store. Things different than what the owner at the local LFS does. So, I got to wondering - if we could make the LFS any way we want...what would it look like? What would it carry (or not), etc.

Mine would not keep his live rock in a trash can with no light or water movement. He would have a big tank in the middle of the store with all the live rock in it (like a trough) and good lights on it and I could shop for the perfect piece at any time.

They would always have RO/DI water in.

They would stock sexy shrimp and nano fish.

They would have a decent frag tank.

They wouldn't just tell me what I wanted to hear but wouldn't treat me like an idiot when I know what I want either.

Well, that's just the start...what do you all thinK?

I always like seeing tanks in the LFS I go to where it's an actual reef setup and they won't sell from the tank, unless it's a great regular customer and it's easy to get, but can get things in for you. I think it shows people what can be done with saltwater.

Not get in fish that get too big for most home aquaria - Emperer Snapper and one that is referred to as a Powder Blue Reef Cod (? if someone could place what this actually is, pm me, I keep forgetting to write down the scientific name they have that goes with it).

Books to refer people to before buying the fish so they can educate themselves before making impulse decisions that happen to be the wrong decision.

Hmmm. I would want one that does not carry fishes that are impossible to keep in the home aquaria, : Emerald Green filefish, Mandarin Dragonets, Moorish idols, ect. I would want one with a decent frag tank like how u said, and I would want one that actally takes good care of the fish.( I happened to b very lucky because I have a lfs that takes GREAT care of sw fishes. Too bad they dont sell frags. =(

Mandarins aren't impossible to keep?

But I would say I really like my LFS in terms of the livestock they sell. If they carried better dry goods, I would do all my shopping there.

My favorite LFS has all those things you want except the Frag tank, Journey. What I want is a LFS with a real selection of Plants and real Ferts ie. dry and/or Seachem's Flourish products. Oh and CO2 refills, hehe.

Absolutely - really should have some macro algae dedicated tanks.

I'd also like a library corner with comfy chairs to read up on marine stuff while sitting amongst all those great tanks.

I would like them to have merchandise IN when I want it. I HATE ordering merchandise through the LFS - that defeats the purpose of going for me. If I wanted to order it, I could do it myself online and save myself middle man money!

AND, I would like more tank selection. Like a Walmart of reef stores.

My LFS is all of the above...they started as a website and have had a store up for in my area for some time now...this is their site if you are interested. www.vividaquariums.com

great thread since im headed in this direction

my thought would be the employees would not just be employees but they would actually know something about fish

also it would be one which is kid friendly

and most importantly would not be one where dead or dying fish be left in the tank to be sucked up and dissolved on the filter head

ill have to think a bit about set up ill get back to you on this

Mine would be an idiot-free staff:D
I overheard an employee in a local LFS telling a potential SW customer that "more than likely most of your first fish are going to die...." and cringed.
