Feedback on an idea? (Rather Long)

I thought about it, when I first picked up Freddie, but decided against it because I don't have a heater or a hood for that tank yet, and the sponge filter I bought for it is currently running in the big tank so it can fill up with bacteria simultaneously to make cycling the 10 really fast and easy once I do get those pieces. It's really been no trouble for me to change the jar water daily (it's a little larger than half a gallon)...I fill a large bowl with tap water with a little Prime in it, let it sit out overnight to get to room temp, do a 50-60% water change every morning...I tested one morning before the change and nothing had built up at all, but I still do it every day as a preventative measure. Since the 10 gallon isn't cycled yet, I'd have to run tests and do larger water changes daily to keep Freddie's parameters okay during the cycle, and if it wasn't done cycling by the time I take off on the 25th my husband would be stuck with that chore and I really want him to have zero worries while I'm gone...also, with him working 12 hour shifts, if anything went wrong it would go unnoticed for a while. The 46 should be done cycling tomorrow or the day after and I could do a WC before leaving so the only chore would be daily feedings. Snails that I want anyway would add a little to the bio-load and I like Julie's suggestion of over-feeding, and after I get back from my trip I'll have plenty of time to finish setting up the QT for the neons. Also, all the cool plants and rocks and driftwood are in the 46 while the 10 is barren and I think Freddie would be more comfortable with that entertainment :)

does the jar have a heater?

i think you are missing what i am saying - you do not have to worry about cycling the 10g with the betta in it. what is your 10 tank? nothing but a bigger bowl. rather than having to do water changes on it every day, you can do a water change twice a week. if you are afraid of the betta jumping out, don't fill it up all the way. if there are decorations or plants in the bowl, put them in the tank.

i promise you - while the 46g may be a fishy heaven, the 10g is still a big step up from a half-gallon container. personally, i don't see an issue here. it actually makes things easier on Jeremiah because he will only have to do ONE water change while you are gone, instead of a little one every morning.

Nope. That would be dangerous and it's been hot here lately so room temp is 80+, he should be quite comfortable...I get your point, but I still think using Freddie to accomplish a fishy cycle in an unprepared 10 is a lot more work and dangerous to him than maintaining his jar for another day or two and worrying about cycling that tank after I'm back from my trip.

I see :). That does make sense...but if I put him in the cycled tank, there'd be no WC necessary 'til after I got back, and if I did it that way I'd have to ask Jeremiah to maintain that water as well as continue dosing the main tank with ammonia. I'm going to sound like a doting wife here (which I am) but I want to make my absence as stress free as possible...the Army puts him through the ringer every day and with the switch to 12 hour shifts (that are often longer), he basically has time to eat, shower, and sleep when he gets home. He puts on a great face and probably wouldn't mind, but I hate to ask extra of him if I can come up with another solution. I obviously have a lot of time on my hands to try and figure stuff out until school starts. I really do appreciate all the input, not trying to sound stubborn...I love these forums because of the constant exchange of ideas and debates :)
