Feeder fish

I have a 46g tank with mollies and swordtails, they breed all the time so I take the fry out when I can catch them and put them over into a grow-out tank (well my QT tank, but it keeps the filter cycled for when I need it). Once they are the right size they become tasty treats for the cichlids.

Even though fish eat fish in the wild, that's not all they eat. They'll also eat insects and like, whatever they can find. They are also opportunistic feeders where they aren't able to find food every day. Healthy feeder fish as treats are great, but are nutritionally incomplete as a main diet. If your fish will take prepared foods, give them that stuff more than feeders.

Gosh, I just put about a hundred babies over into the grow-out tank...

If you have a LFS you can prolly buy swordtails and mollies a lot cheaper than you can pay overnight shipping on them from me. They usually go for about $2~3 each...

THIS!
While I have no compunction about feeding live fish to predatory fish when I am sure about their health, I cannot agree more with this statement. A varied diet consisting of multiple live, frozen and prepared foods is key to optimum health.

Now, with that said, all fish benefit from a certain amount of vegetation in their diet, and the most efficient way to provide this to predators is with live feeders well gutloaded with high grade vegetarian fish food shortly (within an hour) before being offered.

I actually think that live feed (be it fish, shrimp, worms, whatever) enhances a fish's quality of life. Let's face it, some of our little finned friends love to hunt out a tastey live snack. The fry of many species don't even see food as being food unless it's wiggling. That should tell us something!

That said, most fish will do better with a more varied diet. BUT, you should always research the exact species you have to find out what kinds of foods will help that species thrive. Some fish require a higher level of protein than others and some can actually get sick if they get too much protein and not enough veg matter.
