Feeding Betta while away

Hello,
I am going out of town for a few days and am concerned about the care and feeding of my Betta while I'm away. I have read that Bettas can go without food for several days (even up to a week.) However, I am considering using the slow release feeding blocks available at my LFS.

Does anyone have any experience with leaving your Betta buddy for a few days?

The problem with a lot of the vacation feeders is that they use gypsum as an agent to hold the food and slowly break up.

in a nutshell, you're putting a bit of drywall in your tank. which isn't high on my list of priorities.

Personally, if I had nothing to hand, I'd try to look for the Tetra vacation feeders.. they are gel based not gypsum. My highest preference would be either homemade gel food or something appropriate from Repashy.
 
Maybe you could get a feeding ring.....and put it in right before you leave?

If it is less than a week, its better for your water quality if you don't feed until you return. If you do let a neighbor feed I would recommend separating out how much food he is supposed to get each day into a few ziploc bags (or someone else suggested those one week pill boxes) so that he is not over fed.

Thank you! Great point about the daily portions.
 
Is your betta tank filtered? You really would be much better off not trusting someone else to take care of your fish. People unfamiliar with fish keeping will more likely than not have a propensity to over feed. A week or even a little longer without food won't hurt your betta at all.
