I was wondering if anyone's tried feeding their cichlids salmon. My little motaguensis seems to love the stuff. Someone once posted a similar query on the general frshwater forum and people suggested that it might be too fatty. Any ideas on whether this would be a problem for cichlids? Motas are piscivorous anyway, and I'm not planning to feed it as a staple, but more as a treat.b

Salmon is high in fat but I believe most of it is like a protective layer so to speak not in the actual meat, of course I could be wrong. I have fileted a bigillion of them and it seems like all of the fat is up near the dorsal against the spine and the back of the head along the spine. Any way, people feed beefheart and that is high in fat also. I think as a treat it would be okay but I wouldn't use it as a staple. Why don't you just use shrimp?
That reminds me salmon is the first ingredient on the pellet food that I use, so now I am curious too.

As a treat maybe, i would rinse it off before you put it in the tank. Also as a treat i mean like maybe a little monday and a little friday. Other wise i wouldnt be concerned about it.

BTW, thats some expensive fish food:D

If you work somewhere where they have scraps (fishmarket, food store, marina or restaurant) there will be a lot of fish available as free scraps. My main concern isn't with it being healthy or not but more of tank hygien. I feed a lot of scrap fish - as much as the fish will eat - and if you don't get it out of the tank when it doesn't get eaten it will go bad and foul the water very quickly.

Fishscraps IMO is excellent bulk food for fish and safe too. But do vary the food to ensure the fish get a balanced nutritional diet.

I still feed enriched flakes, colorbits and pellets along with frozen krill and worms. Vegetarian flakes and vitamin enriched flakes are things that I feel are vital and you need to suppliment.
