is it bad for goldfish to eat sinking algae wafers. mine really seem to love them so i feed them that once a day and goldfish crisps once a day. is this good or should i cut down. any suggestions would help.

thanks,
Troy

i feed mine algae tablets. the very first time, he gorged on them and had major swim bladder trouble. since then, however, there have been no problems. i like to think that working on the little chip brings some excitement to his day. he doesn't seem to recognize flakes as food anymore.

Expensive, but no problem. IMO--Goldfish can eat cheaper food.

yup... why couldnt they eat it?? they r goldfish.. they can eat whatever. but the algae waffers are fine... but like he said.. why not spend less money and feed them something different???? mmhmm.. yeah . lol

You'll save a lot of money giving him canned peas.

As long as his main diet is gf specific, anything extra just adds some variety, which is good

Frozen peas are better, they aren't overcooked (which loses nutrients) in the canning process, and they do not have salt or other preservatives added. You'll need to dethaw them before you feed them to your fish, and if you have juvenile goldies, you'll want to remove the skins and mush up the peas a bit so they are easier for the fish to eat.

If it is fun for you to feed them the algae wafers and it isn't breaking your purse, I wouldn't worry too much about the price of food. Higher quality foods are healthier for any type of fish. Just remember your goldfish need more vegetable based foods than meat. Algae wafers work great for this, but you'd want to avoid giving them daily doses of say, brine shrimp, which could make things hard for their digestive systems.

thanks,

ive been feeding them these because i have a bunchof these things around and i have no clue what to do with them. i try feeding them to the pleco at night and he wont take them. even though i leave the tank light off and i wait a few hours into the night to feed them to him. and the cory catfish likes them so i put two at a time in and the goldfish get 1 and the catfish gets 1.

Try putting a terra cotta flower pot in your tank (and/or some driftwood). My rubber-lipped pleco spent a lot of time on a pot when I got it, and I heard a suggestion that they may need to file down their rasps on a rough surface.

Make sure you use a clean one that hasn't been used for plants so you don't accidentally add fertilizer residue to your tank.
