Today I caught a little fly/gnat that was flying around our house, and decided to throw it in my 45g fishtank. My angelfish went NUTS! He thought that was just the best treat ever, and has been searching for more since I gave it to him.
Now, I'm wondering if feeding a bug to my fish was such a good idea... anyone else done this? Is it possible that feeding flys/mosquitos/spiders etc. could give my fish parasites, or could I start giving them the little creepy crawlies that come in through the window as special treats?
Thanks for your ideas :D

Some bugs contain toxins that may cause your fish some stomach aches. They are a bugs natural defense to being eaten. I wouldn't feed them things like centipedes or moths. Its up to your discretion what to feed them. I fed my bichir a baby grasshopper i found in my kitchen the other day. It was almost an inch long and was still green and tender. He loved it.

Not only that, but you also do not know where the bugs may have been. They may have consumed or been sprayed with poison next door.

I usually feed my fish earthworms which they really love. Also any ants around the house. Usually all the household bugs are already taken care of by my dog though.

my dad had an angelfish that would get all excited if you waved the flyswatter around, and a bucket of water left out colected mosquito eggs taht became wigglers for the fish. we only gave the fish wigglers from water we knew was clean from other nasties the fish could get sick from... and we didn't leave them long enough to leave the water.

I feed my black skirts flies all the time. Most of the time they can barely swallow them. I fed flies to my rosy barbs, and green sunfish too. I think there is not one type of fish (except herbivores) that does not like flies. I also fed my fish earthworms too. They love them too. I have not encountered any problems yet, and the fish absolutely love the live food.

I feed ants, fies, some beetles (june bugs mostly) and pretty mush anything except spiders or centipedes, Some people will say that spiders are dangerous, others say they aren't, I just don't risk them with my fish. May flies are also awesome if your fish are big enough to handle them.

We feed crickets, grass hoppers and small toads/frogs to our Jags and Oscars.

All of them caught from outside.
