I've got an elephant ear mushroom that is about 6 inches in diameter. It's very cool looking and will form itself into a trumpet or bowl shape on a daily basis. I was curious if I should be feeding this anything special. Didn't know how to feed them if I did.

I don't have an elephant ear so maybe it's different for the type of shroom I have but all I do is give my 2 a decent size bite of raw shrimp and when the rest of the tank gets cyclop-eeze they get that too.

I just checked Borneman's Aquarium Corals and Sprung & Delbeek's Coral Reef Aquaria vol 2. Giant elephant ear mushrooms, Amplexidiscus fenestrafer, eat fish. Live fish. Any and all fish, including clowns. They lure them in and form a purse around them, and then eat them. Usually at night.

You might try silversides.

Now that you say that, I've seen this "purse" it forms. It's usually when the lights go out. I'll try dropping a silverside in there when it forms this to try it out. I don't feel like losing a clown over it. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Very cool. I bought some silversides. Cut one in half and put it on the mouth of the shroom. It started forming the bowl. When it was bowl shaped, small white stringy tenticles started coming out of it's mouth and around the perimeter of it's body. They reached to the silverside and covered it. The bowl completely closed up for some time. It later partially opened, but the silverside was inside of the mushroom. The whole process was very neat to watch. I had no idea that my new little friend could do that. Thanks for the help!

Tell me about it. My little clowns are very happy that I finally fed that beast. I think I will feed it about once every week or so. I don't want to over feed it, but that thing sure seemed happy to get that silverside.
