Hi I just added a Senegal Bichir to my discus tank, which is 75 gal. bow front. My discus are 7 large adults and everyone including the Bichir gets along fine, he has lots of rocks and drift wood to hide in if he wants. I feed my discus a balance meals of pellet food in the morning, and bloodworms in the evening. Through out the day I keep feeder white cloulds for them to have some fun chasing thier food. I know all the above is fine for the S. Bichir but I read that if you feed him Beef Heart he will grow faster. He is now about 5 inches. My only concern about beef heart is that it contains Thiaminase, which is an enzyme that destroys vitamin B in fish. I was wondering since S. Bichir is a primitive fish will feeding it beef heart over a long period of time affect its health?

There is a lot of argument as to the potential issues with feeding beefheart to any fish (hardly a natural diet item). That being said, feeding beefheart once every 10 days (it is not a very complete food, so must be part of a very varied diet) will not likely cause any issues. Just be sure that the beefheart is very fresh and completely trimmed of fat.

do you feed the bichir hikari sinking carnivore pellets? that would be the best staple to the diet.

I find that my bichirs (the ones that will eat pellets) prefer the New Life Spectum pellets...I also find that they are of better quality and greater palatibility, too.

they are expensive but defnitely worth it.

Well I went to Big Al's and purchased the Hikari Sinking Carnivore pellets and boy they are expensive, what I consider a small pack cost $20. I put some pellets in my tank and my discus love them, was the first time I saw them fight each other for food LOL. But, the one guy I got the food for totally ignored the pellets. I guess in time he will come around. I will put some in later tonite and cut off the lights to give him a chance to eat some before the Discus.

as far as i know there is only one size and it usually runs about $10 in an LFS.

Two sizes, as far as I am aware, the 2.5oz/125g and the 2.2lb/1kg bags....the larger is much cheaper by weight, but still about $100 to buy.

The NLS I use is the Thera A jumbo (6mm) sinking formula...it is about $40 for the 1.3 pound jar and $90 for the 5lb bucket.
