Hi,

I've been a lurker here for awhile, and finally got around to registering. :)

I recently got a couple Siamese Algae Eaters. I'm wondering how to feed these guys, since my tank is currently algae free. It seemed they weren't getting much to eat at feeding time, so, based on info from browsing through the archives, I bought some sinking algae pellets for them to feed on.

The problem is that once the Tiger Barbs finish whatever flake food or brine shrimp I've fed them, they go for the algae pellet, and chase away the Siamese Algae Eaters, then the Tiger Barbs proceed to finish off the pellet. Increasing the amount of flakes or brine shrimp helps, but once that 2nd helping is finished, they again go for the algae pellet and chase the SAEs away and proceed to finish the pellet.

The Siamese Algae Eaters then just scavenge whatever small bits of flake food that the Tiger Barbs missed or left behind, but it hardly seems like enough, since the Albino Corys are much more diligent scavengers than the SAEs, and get most of the leftovers.

Any ideas? Or will the SAEs find enough food by scavenging?

My SAE jsut eats the flakes or whatever else i'm feeding right form the surface like all the other fish. I dont' feed it anyhtign special. I sometimes throw in some sinking pellets or veggies for my loaches and pleco and the SAE also eat them.

DO the barbs chase the SAE while he is trying to eat the flakes or jsut the sinking pellets?

you can always try feeding at night. or make a little cave jsut big enough for the SAE and feed him in there.

The Tiger Barbs only chase the SAEs away from the sinking algae pellet when there is nothing else to eat. They then proceed to eat the pellet themselves.

When eating flake food or brine shrimp, the Tiger Barbs are too busy eating to chase anything away, but they feed aggressively, so the SAEs only get a minimal amount of the flake food. The SAEs don't seem to like brine shrimp very much either. After all the food is gone, then the Tiger Barbs go for the sinking pellet.
