Hey guys

As some of you know I've been researching apistos in the hope of adding one to my aquarium. I have no experience in keeping them but have been reading and making notes. However, to me there seems a tricky point.

Feeding...

It seems to vary according to who is giving the info. That and the fact that some suggest live food while others don't. I'm left wondering if frozen live food will be a good supplement as I don't want to add live food and risk introducing diseases.

I feed my current stock frozen bw and daphnia and have never had any problems.

What do you guys feed your apistos?

Live food is so good it goes without saying. The benefits outweigh the risks which you can minimize by raising your own. Frozen is good. They'll eat flakes and pellets as well. A variety of quality food is the key for any fish unless it's an obligate feeder.

Mine get pellets as a staple, and assorted frozen foods. I shift towards more frozen when I'm trying to coax a spawn out of them.

For breeding purposes, I used mainly live blackworms along with fz bloods, black mosquito larvae, daphnia (can be bit messy), etc, etc.

I feed my mamma and babies Captain Bob's Flake and i just grind it up in my fingers. Sometimes they get a treat of frozen brine shrimp and they love those too!

I only feed frozen brine or baby brine. If i had more ambition i would feed newly hatched bb shrimp.

my triple reds breed like rabbits.

Hi Rj and Kerry

Can I ask how the colour of tour fish is affected by this, if at all. Pics would be a great help also.

Can I ask for pics also just to compare with the above?

Spectra flake and pellets, FR. blood worms on the weekend.

Again umm pics please?

I doubt ill be able raise my own, sadly.

I figured I'd ask for pics as I've read that a shortage or abundance of live food affects thier colour?

Appreciate the input guys. Just need to find a Borellii (yellow) now. Something which is turning out to be no easy task!

I feed a wide range of foods, depending on if they are domestic or wild caught.

Live red wigglers (that I culture), white worms, small amounts of flake, and pellets. I, too, condition with live. I also use a lot of leaf litter which produces infusoria and have been known to feed the fry in the tank paramecium, baby brine (both frozen and fresh), and golden pearls.
Here are a few pics of my different males.
