I've had a female betta in my planted 55 with a large angel, 2 bolivian rams, 10 neons, and 6 cories for several weeks now. Everyone gets along, but she's the biggest pig when it comes to eat. I generally feed a small pinch of Omega One flakes twice a day. The fish are able to eat everything within 3-4 minutes. The betta gets most of the chow, especially when the flakes are smaller. She has ballooned up significantly, but there are no signs of stress or illness, so all seems good. I just wonder how long she'll keep this up before she pops. Any suggestions as to how to put her on a diet without taking her out of the tank or quarantining her every time I feed?

Here's a pic taken a month ago... she's gotten bigger since:

I dont know about a long term solution, but for now, try to get her into a QT tank or a breeder net/box to isolate her. Cook a can of peas, take one or 2 and remove the skin. Feed those to her. Eat the rest of the peas yourself, there good for you :D This will act the same way to her as prunes do in humans ;) Definatly looks like she is constapated.

Just my opinion but to me it looks like she is egg bound and not constipated. JM2C

I agree, she is full of eggs. It seems my female bettas always get like that; however, they also get more then there fair share of food.

alrighty, so if a female was egg bound, and someone were to place her in a spawning tank with a male betta, would the squeezing out of the eggs go normally? my female betta's stomach is gettin close to that size, and she only has been eating mosquito larvae every feeding time (won't touch her betta bits; a different story for my male though :D)i'm wondering if she's fillin up with roe or w/e. never really saw a pic of a "pregnant" betta.
