Hello everyone. ^_^
I need some help determining when my female, Minisota, is going to give birth to all of those cute little guppy fry. <3

When i got her about 3 weeks ago she wasn't yet pregnant i don't think >>
well she probably was but it wasn't showing yet...
anyway, she been looking like she's gonna give bbirth any day now for the past week, but i'm not totally sure on when that might be.

I have a breeder trap to put her in, but i don't want to put her in there too early, but i don't want her to end up having them out in the community tank and eat them. Many of my hiding spots aren't small enough so that the fry can hide and the parents can't get them.

So i posted a couple pictures, hoping that you guys can help me. Please help me determine when exactly i should be putting her in the trap.

There is also a male in my tank that chases her all day and kind of stresses her out.

Do you think i should put her in the trap and just leave her there until she has them? i don't want to do that because it'll put some stress on here but if it's the best solution, i don't know what i'm gonna do about it. :/

Here are the pictures::
1.) This is a picture of her gravid spot. I couldn't get a good picture of her because she won't stop swimming around. :/ i think she's afraid of my phone lol :< I do not believe this picture does her any kind of justice, gravid spot wise. It's humungo and black.

2.) This is a picture of her fat tummy. Again, it's blurred and everything because she won't stop moving abd i'm trying to get these pictures up top more in the light.

lol you can't even see it in the 2nd picture....
i'll try to get a better one of her gravid spot and post

ok the vid doesn't want to work so just click on one of the links in the embedded video code and it'll bring you there

//sorry it's so crappy, i took it with my phone ^_^"

Personally, I do not trap my female guppies. I find it very stressful on them. I just have my tank well planted and let Nature take it's course. The fry that survive, survive.

Another thing that worries me with breeder traps is if you put the female in too early, she will get so stressed that she give birth pre-maturely.

:iagree: I agree with guppy man. Maybe put a few more plants in there and the young will have adequate hiding places (thin leaved if you can). Even if their plastic. But breeding traps can be too stressful. Guppy grass wouldn't be too bad as long as you can trim it often.

i have a few plastic plants and i've been trying to buy some others on here from someone but they take so long to PM me back and they're never on or don't answer or something >>""
i hvae the money and i asked how much to send them and i still have no answer 2 days later. i wanted them for when she gives birth but i don't think it's gonna happen.

it's guppy grass if you guys were wondering.

and i'm still afraid that the parents are gonna eat the guppies. The plants i have a big leaved and the parents can get to all of them. They're not stupid :/ sometimes i wish they were :( lol

Any kind of plant will do. Floating is best as the fry tend to stay towards the top. Trust me, the babies are smart enough that if they have a little plant corner, they will stick to that area. Another suggestion, once the babies are born (if you can be there within the next day or so) you can net the baby guppies and put them in the breeder trap, just take out the separation part. That will keep some of the little guys safe. My guppies do not eat the fry, so I don't have many problems as far as that goes.

And it appears that your female will be giving birth within the next 2 weeks. A key-clue to look for is her belly appear squared.

Trevor

EDIT: Now that i watch the video, your female doesn't look very pregnant at all. You may even have up to 3 weeks. Mind you, a guppies gestation period is from 3-5 weeks.

OnO it IS hard to see in the video as well but her gavid spot is pretty big and it's looked like that for probably a good 2 1/2 weeks now o:
you're probably right.
thanks for the tip about the square shape. i'll look for it O:

i've gotten so much feedback from this saying she's gonna give birth in like 2 days, about a week, and now as long as 3 weeks lol
:<

so in between, i should try to get a couple more females for my tank, and my male is chasing her alot so she doesn't rest, like in the video but literally all day like that and probably night too from what i've seen.
:<

therefore, i think he will be determined to eat the fry.
i would be too afraid to let her have them in the tank and then scoop them out, because i've seen guppies have them and then just eat a couple by a couple. :<

and the 2-3 weeks will give me some more time to hopefully try and get the plants, and more time for this person to get online ><

Well, she definitely no wheres near giving birth in a few days.

It would be a good idea to get more ideas. And i urge you, PLEASE resist putting her in a breeding trap!
truthfully, females are more likely to eat the fry then males. It is natural process that all female livebearers do to reduce the amount of fry, so that some have a better chance of surviving. And generally, having every single fry survive isn't the best thing ever either. Think about it... One female gives birth about 10-12 times a year. And each batch is about 20 babies. yearly, that means you can get up to 200+ babies! I don't think you really want that many, do you?
