I watched fishtank kings last night and they made fake rocks and a background out of fiberglass for an octopus tank. They tested the water and the fiberglass didnt leach anything into the water.Has anyone tried this method?

from what i have seen/read, any fiberglass items going into a fish tank need to be sealed with an epoxy coating. that's probably what the guys on the show did to make it safe for tank use.

Hi
Fiberglass is chenicly inert when cured they make entire tanks out of the material. If you intend to make it yourself
I find the best is expanding foam "Great stuff" There are a gazillion ways to go about it . You tube has a bunch of videos
on the subject. gary

It depends onthe resin used.
ll fiberglass is not created equal...

Polyester resins are used in normal everyday fiberglass, like car and truck parts. They are not 100% waterproof, because the will allow water to seem through.

Boats are made with a Marine epxoy resin, that is NOT polyester. this is the good stuff that is water proof.

Before you take on an endeavor make sure you know what you are getting yourself into.

You can buy them pre-made from many online sources. IMHO -they are too expensive for what you are getting.

At the LFS I go to they are about 100 dollars for a 75 gallon sized tank.
