I currently bought a 5.5 gallon tank for a fiddler crab that i bought on impulse. yeah I know, bad idea, but I've researched their care very well afterwards. I've had him awhile in a medium plastic square storage tub and he now seems happier in the tank. Has white sand, lots of shells, a filter and rocks, with water level one third of the way. I buy him R/O water from the pet store and add aquarium salt. Everything's perfect i think, except that it seems empty with only 1 crab. I want to get him a lady crab, and i'm aware the eggs most likely will not survive if anything happens. But he seems really lonely doing that crab dance...what do you guys think? too small for 2 fiddlers?

Do you have a ledge where the crab can get out of the water? If not, I would look into that before getting anything else for the tank.

the crab dance (we call it directing traffic) made us get a female too.. but then he killed her.

so we decided that he didn't want a friend.

but i do recommend a ledge or some sort.

I have 2 fiddler crabs in a large tank and they never spend time together. They have established territory and when one comes into the others, they raise their claws and the other will back away. They also need a place to get out of the water. They may survive for a month underwater and will then drown.

Yeah he has a ledge, thats what led me to get him his own tank. I mean, i've read that they don't do well alone and that they're social, but if he might kill her, then i won't get another.

Haha Ok! Might as well. I had a couple Ghost shrimp in my other 5.5 freshwater tank with some mollies and platys, they didn't do so well, but it may have been because I use conditioned tap water and the heavy metals in it aren't good for inverts. Now my crab on the other hand gets RO water because i can carry a couple gallons home from the pet store, so maybe some shrimp will do better with him? Better water conditions, and anyways i really liked the shrimp when i had them.
